Vat Purnima or Vat Savitri Puja is celebrated in the Western states of India, such as Maharashtra, Gujrat and Karnataka. In this festival, women pray for the longevity and the prosperity of their husbands. While praying for the long lives of their husbands, they tie threads around the trunk of the banyan tree on this day. This is known as pipal puja. The married womenobserving this festival in the various parts of the state pay respect to the illustrious lady,Savitri, who was the legendary wife of Satyavan. She is a popular figure as she had rescued her husband’s soul from the God of death, Lord Yama.
Some people believe in celebrating VatSavitri puja on the dark fortnight andis known as the Vat Savitri Amavasi Vrat and some believe in celebrating the puja on a bright fortnight, and is known as Vrat Savitri Purnima Vrat. It is a common belief that vrat or fast blesses the devotees with a better life and good fortune. It is believed that by rigorously observing the fast, women are able to bring good luck and prosperity to their husbands; just the same way the legendary Savitri had brought back her husband from the jaws of death.
